1:32 pm - Transgender people are everywhere

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/06/16/rose.transgender/
Commentary: Transgender people are everywhere By Donna Rose Special to CNN updated 3:20 p.m. EDT, Tue June 16, 2009
Editor's note: Donna Rose is a speaker and advocate for transgender and transsexual issues. She is the author of a memoir, "Wrapped In Blue: A Journey of Self-Discovery." Her Web site is http://donnarose.com/ .
Donna Rose says transgender people don't fit the stereotypes society often tries to impose.
(CNN) -- It was only a matter of time. The real-life drama of being transsexual has come to Hollywood. Chastity Bono, the impossibly cute little blond girl who, for many of my generation, remains frozen in time as the sweet, chubby-faced cherub closing many a Sonny and Cher show in the arms of her doting parents, recently announced that he is transsexual and will be transitioning from female to male. He will go by the name of Chaz.
As shocking as this news may be to some, it is yet another reminder that all is not necessarily as it appears and that each of us is more complicated than simply the skin and bones of our bodies. Rather, it is our heart and spirit that defines us.
Transgender people -- that is, people who may not experience or express their gender in ways that are necessarily typical for the physical sex of their body -- have been part of the fabric of cultures for as long as history has been recorded. ( Read more... )

4:33 pm - The Advocate Refers to Trans Woman as a Gay Man
|

queerunity
|
The Advocate a premiere LGBT news magazine has come under pressure from trans activists and allies after it referred to a couple who were legally married in New York as a "same-sex" couple. In the article N.Y. Unwittingly Marries "Same-Sex" Couple, the couple Hakim Nelson and Jason Stenson were given a marriage license because the clerk was unaware of the birth gender of Nelson who now goes by Kimah.
Neither Jason nor Kimah identify as gay, and this is a poor example of reporting. Please read this and contact The Advocate and let them know it's time to report on trans issues accurately.

I don't know how to start this or bring the subject up because I am afraid of this community hating/bashing/etc me.
I've id'ed as FTM since October...well thats when I stopped denying it all and faced the truth. It is now May and for the last two weeks I realized I have come to a dilemma.
I'm a gay FTM who likes to wear skirts. Now it's not regualr kind of skirts. It's the kind I consider very Wiccan-ish or Natur-ish....
google Pyramid Collection Magazine for examples.
According to my friend Destini, she thinks I pass pretty well, except for my voice and sometimes my face. And I have had employees at stores call me Sir.
I also happen to like a particualr style of dressing called Fruits(it's Japanese...go google it) in which people dress more colorfully and what not. I even have customized my jeans with patches....a big step for me.
What I'm wanting is advice and thoughts about what you guys think. I want to pass as male but also want to be true to myself. I want to be my own guy but right now I think with being pre-everything me wearing skirts might defeat the whole purpose.
What do you guys think........HELP PLEASE!!!

Letter-Writing Gathering in support of HB 1722
Come together to make a difference.
Haven't yet got round to writing a letter of support to your legislator? House Bill 1722 would make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender expression or identity, and would affect employment, hate crimes, and more.
Are you Jewish and looking for a welcoming community of faith? Come meet Rabbi Victor Reinstein, who gave moving testimony in support of HB 1722 at the public hearing.
Both events are: Tuesday 27 May 2008 at 7.30 pm Nehar Shalom Community Synagogue 43 Lochstead Ave Jamaica Plain, MA
For more information, e-mail ren.pilinger@gmail.com.

7:58 am - Dr. Stefanides

I'm still looking for a way to get top surgery done, but I need a surgeon close to home. I heard of a Dr. Stefanides in Nashville (only hour and a half away! Hooray!) who does the surgery, but all I find of him on transster are a pallo and a chest revision. Does anyone know anything else about him or have any photos of his work?

7:28 pm - Crazy Doctors ahoy!

I went to my GP for some results and to get a referral for a psychiatrist. I have an ovarian cyst (blargh), and after finding that out, I asked "Hey, is it possible to get a referral to a good psychiatrist? I would prefer one that specialised in helping patients with identity issues and gender dysphoria."
She looked at me, and then was like: "What? Oh, you're one of them." Me: "Excuse me?" Her: "You know, you can't pretend to be a man. Its unnatural." Me: "...you know, I asked for a referral."
She then launched into a lecture on my mental health, my inability to accept what nature had given me, how I was a WOMAN, and until I embrace this I will never be happy. She actually pulled the 'childbearing is a woman's greatest gift!' shit on me, telling me that my disassociation and depression were related to me not wanting to have children! Also, that makes me selfish, according to this woman. She went on a huge rant about the guy having the baby in the US, again citing that 'she' (she refused to use the masculine pronoun) was unnatural, that he was pretending to be a man, and that his pregnancy is because he finally succumbed to his female urges and was so unhappy without kids. Right. It has nothing to do with his wife having had a hystorectomy, rite?
So yeah. Dr. Jigau in Melbourne? Don't go to her for any trans/GLBI health issues, if you live in Australia. She will glare at you and go: "So, you're a lesbian???" with angry eyebrows. Also, babies. LOTS OF BABIES. They cure depression, you know. I never got my referral, either.
I have never had this sort of crap directed at me before. Is this common?

12:59 am - I cut my hair! :D
|

crystalseraph
|
As a kid, I used to demand that my hair was worn short. I had it cut into a boy's style until I started early puberty, when mum started getting the hairdresser to do a sort of bob. I was given hell for it by other kids, and even adults, especially as I got older. So I grew it out. I spent a lot of time trying to conform, to stop the bullying, and teasing about being a fat tomboy and whatever. I went to a girl's school, and we had to wear skirts and look lady-like. I just fell into it, and I had hair down to my butt until yesterday.

2:28 pm - Trans Timeline
|

ftmichael
|
From transgroupblog. This is here because I find it interesting. I did not compile this timeline. If you have any issues with it, please comment at http://transgroupblog.blogspot.com/2008/02/trans-timeline.html , not here.
I’ve been putting together a Trans History Timeline for my Transgender Lives class. The idea was to give them an idea of the events that lead up to the modern Transgender Movement (such as it is).
* 1910: German Jew Magnus Hirschfeld coins “transvestite” (& "transsexual" in 1923) * 1919: Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Research given housing in Berlin, Germany * 1930: Dane Lili Elbe has male genitals removed, followed by four other surgeries, the fifth of which (transplant of uterus) kills her in 1931 * 1933: Institute for Sexual Research burned by Nazis * 1939 – 1945: WWII * 1945: Briton Michael Dillon has first FTM surgeries * 1951: Briton Roberta Cowell transitions in the UK * 1952: American Christine Jorgensen headline, “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Bombshell” * 1959: American Virginia Prince starts Transvestia * 1961: Virginia Prince starts Heels & Hose (12 crossdressers!) * 1964: American Reed Erickson founds the Erickson Educational Foundation * 1966: German Harry Benjamin publishes The Transsexual Phenomenon * 1966: Compton’s Cafeteria Riots, San Francisco * 1969: First Gender Symposia (becomes HBIGDA) * 1969: Stonewall riots, New York City * 1973: First Introduction of ENDA (US) * 1975: Fantasia Fair starts in Provincetown, MA, US, founded by Ariadne Kane * 1976: Tri-Ess formed * 1976: Crossdressing becomes legal in San Francisco * 1977: HBIGDA becomes an org * 1979: American Sandy Stone leaves Olivia Records due to attacks in Janice Raymond’s The Transsexual Empire * 1980: Crossdressing becomes legal in Houston, TX (due to Phyllis Frye's efforts) * 1986: FTM Int'l started by American Lou Sullivan * 1987: IFGE formed * 1990: AEGIS started by American Dallas Denny * 1993: Mosaic web browser * 1994: Murder of American Brandon Teena / Netscape web browser * 1995: “All FTM Conference of the Americas” organised by Americans Jamison Green & Jason Cromwell (with grant from Dallas Denny)
I was teaching Jamison Green’s Becoming a Visible Man at the time, which is why it ends where it does, but I’ve been adding to it since, & will continue to do so.
